Can I do car battery maintenance myself?

Replacing a car battery can be complex, even for professionals, and doing it improperly can damage your vehicle. Only replace your car battery if you’re experienced with mechanics and electronics.

If you’re comfortable enough under your vehicle’s hood, some battery maintenance tasks are not that difficult. You can clean battery corrosion or tighten the clamps. Inspect the posts and terminals for white or green chalk; if you see it, clean it with a soft-bristle brush. Make sure the fasteners are all secure and then add dielectric gel to the posts and terminals to prevent corrosion.

How long does it take for a car battery replacement?

With a qualified auto mechanic, your car battery can be replaced within 20 to 30 minutes, including onboard computer resetting and registering the battery.

How can I tell if my car battery needs to be replaced?

Subtle signs your battery may be dying include dim headlights while idling, an unfamiliar startup sound or feel, or any glitches in the electronics. More obvious signs include needing a car battery jump-start or a slow crank. If you experience any of these dead battery symptoms, bring your vehicle in for a battery test and replacement before it dies completely. Schedule your free battery test now.

How to keep your battery running longer?

Regular driving or using a trickle charger can keep your battery healthy for longer. Keeping the terminals clean and free from corrosion also helps. Avoid frequent short trips that strain the battery or leaving lights on or accessories plugged in when the vehicle is off. If you need further tips, a technician can also check your car’s voltage, tighten fasteners, clean the battery, and apply anti-corrosion dielectric gel.

How do you test a car battery?

Our certified technicians use top-of-the-line testers called conductance testers that test the voltage and amperage as well as the internal resistance of the battery, which identifies how well your battery can conduct electricity. Each test compares the cold cranking amp ratings to the normal operating range specified by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Unless you have the tools and knowledge to do so correctly, it’s recommended to bring in your vehicle for a free battery check.
