Your engine is the heart of your vehicle, and to keep it healthy, it needs to operate with fresh oil throughout its life. Motor oil is considered an engine’s lifeblood; your vehicle would quickly self-destruct without oil.

Importance of Oil Changes

An oil change is an important maintenance service that should be taken care of regularly. This is because your oil is vital for reliable engine operation. As oil is pumped through the engine, it thoroughly coats the many moving parts inside to minimize friction while dispelling heat and removing carbon deposits.

Oil becomes dirty and begins to oxidize as it ages. When this happens, it's unable to protect your engine the way it did when it was new. That’s why timely oil changes are so important.

Is It Time for an Oil Change?

There should be few to no symptoms before you take your car for an oil change. However, if your oil has oxidized and is not providing the best protection for your vehicle, or you have gone past your recommended service interval, you may notice a few of the following symptoms:

  • Rough idle
  • Exhaust smoke
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Oil warning light

Don’t Miss an Oil Change

Some drivers are very casual about when they get an oil change and will go hundreds and sometimes even thousands of miles past their service interval before they bring their vehicle in for an oil change. However, at Tire Works, we can't discourage this practice enough—especially living in Las Vegas. This desert climate requires an oil change schedule specialized to the area so that engines can operate under the absolute best protection.

Going past your recommended service interval can cause adverse effects and irreversible damage to your engine surprisingly quickly. Your vehicle has an oil filter where solids are trapped to ensure your engine can operate under the best conditions However, if you drive too long past your service interval and your oil filter clogs, a bypass valve will open, and oil sludge will circulate through your engine. This can quickly cause heat to build up within your engine and damage parts.

Protect Your Engine with the Right Oil

Not all oil provides the same protection for your vehicle. In fact, some types of oil are completely incompatible with certain engines.

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil is made from crude oil and is refined enough to provide protection and lubrication for your engine. While conventional oil is the lowest-cost oil you can purchase for your vehicle, it provides the lowest level of protection. This type of oil oxidizes once heated beyond temperatures of about 275°F, making it incompatible with many high-performance turbocharged engines. If your engine is compatible with this type of oil, it should be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

Synthetic Blend

Synthetic blend oil offers enhanced protection over conventional oil thanks to its blend of conventional and synthetic properties. Often formulated for high-mileage engines, this oil can withstand temperatures of up to 400ºF and often features sealants and detergents to enhance engine longevity. Synthetic blend typically requires a 5,000- to 7,500-mile change interval.

Full Synthetic

Full synthetic oil offers the best protection for your engine. Able to withstand temperatures of up to 500ºF, this oil can tolerate the high temperatures of turbochargers and other high-performance engines while offering the longest change intervals. Because synthetic oil burns clean and is not prone to carbon buildup, full synthetic oil offers the longest change intervals of 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
